Suite

Series of 25 photographs, inkjet prints, 90x60 cm, 2014–2019

This work follows the movement of an observer through the standard architecture of the post-industrial city. In the process of perception, the rhythm of the city forms in the viewer.

The pictures for the “Suite” series are shot in the outer districts of Zurich. The series follows the movement of an observer through the standard architecture of the post-industrial city. Such zones are characterized by large windows on the ground floor. These transparent surfaces are not shop windows and the gazes of passersby are blocked by blinds, curtains, and opaque films. Together with the shiny facades of aluminum, glass, and polished stone, the veiled glass fronts create a reflecting, semi-transparent surface in which the surrounding urban spaces are mirrored. These reflections in which the architecture of the city is projected onto itself are the points of departure for this series.

“Suite” traces the way the image of the city is constantly emerging and dissolving in the experience of moving through space. The work inquires into the precarious balance in the relationship between image, object, and perceiving subject. In the process of perception, the rhythm of the city forms in the viewer: grids and proportions of horizontal and vertical lines on facades, rows of windows, street signs, lampposts, tree trunks, etc.
